MINIONS & MONSTERS STUMBLES STATESIDE—BUT BANANA PEELS GO GLOBAL!
Universal's latest yellow critter adventure hits a franchise low in the U.S.—but overseas crowds are still laughing all the way to the box office.

Ouch! Illumination/Universal's "Minions & Monsters" kicked off with the lowest domestic opening in the entire Despicable Me/Minions franchise, pulling just $61.4 million over the 5-day weekend and $36.4 million for the 3-day, according to Deadline. That's a serious slip on a banana peel for a property that's usually unstoppable stateside!
But here's where it gets interesting: the little yellow goofballs are CRUSHING IT overseas! The film snagged a worldwide $146.4 million global weekend across 72 territories (per Deadline), with a massive $85 million haul from international markets alone. That includes a No. 1 debut in China, where "Minions & Monsters" pulled RMB111.5 million ($16.4 million) during the July 3–5 weekend, beating out local sci-fi comedy "Keep Real," which opened in second place with $10.5 million, Variety reports.
With nearly $160 million in the worldwide kitty already, "Minions & Monsters" is proving that sometimes the real party happens when you leave home—even if American audiences are taking a pass for now!
